Cloud on Dell Servers

Introducing Standard  Edition of Ubuntu® Enterprise Cloud (UEC) on Dell® Servers

When you’re building a cloud solution, you need the assurance that your software and hardware components will work well together and are backed by expert services and support.

Canonical and Dell have teamed up to deliver an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud using Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) on Dell Servers. The unique combination of UEC and Dell PowerEdge™ C servers gives your business unprecedented flexibility over its IT services. Now you can build and test an IaaS cloud that can scale internally as well as take advantage of public clouds. UEC is the platform to build public, private or hybrid clouds.

Perfect for testing and development, the Standard Edition of UEC on Dell Servers solution offers your enterprise a quick and easy way to build your private cloud with confidence. With a combination of Dell PowerEdge C servers, Canonical’s UEC, a detailed implementation guide and matchless support, you’ll be ready to provide cloud computing to your internal users. You'll be ready to test IaaS in an easy-to-deploy environment. Once you've set up the Standard Edition of UEC on Dell Servers you can deploy workloads and get them running immediately, and grow or shrink computing capacity to meet the needs of your application.

Standard Edition of UEC on Dell Servers offers:

Your own IaaS cloud

  • Get your cloud up and running fast with a pre-defined architecture.
  • Enjoy a seamless experience with hardware configurations that have been tested with UEC.
  • Automatically power up more server nodes as and when you need them.

Open-source, no-fee cloud software

  • Avoid vendor lock-in using industry-standard API, image and storage formats.
  • Benefit from free, regular updates within the Ubuntu long-term support (LTS) cycle.
  • Pay only for the services you use, not the technology.

Standards-based technology

  • Use the same API on a public (Amazon EC2) or private cloud.
  • Use the same machine images (UEC images) on a public or private cloud.
  • Take advantage of management tools that work equally well on both your public and private clouds.

Comprehensive support

  • Gain peace of mind with a fully supported stack.
  • Get help fast with a single point of contact for all your support and services needs.
  • Save time with no support loops.

The best of both worlds

  • UEC and Amazon EC2.

Any Ubuntu images that run on UEC can be easily moved to Amazon EC2. Since UEC accepts the same API calls that Amazon uses, you can easily build hybrid solutions that scale both public and private clouds.

私有云

A private cloud built within a company firewall gives added assurance to businesses where data security, governance and compliance concerns are paramount.UEC is one of the many features of Ubuntu Server Edition. It is the integration of several open-source projects (KVM, Libvirt, Eucalyptus, Powernap, etc.) that help businesses create and experiment with a cloud environment inside their firewalls.

The Standard Edition of UEC on Dell Servers has been tested to run on Dell PowerEdge C servers, resulting in an easy-to-install, scalable IaaS cloud solution.

Eucalyptus powers the UEC offering, which brings Amazon EC2-like infrastructure capabilities inside the firewall. This joint solution is designed to simplify the process of building and managing an internal cloud for businesses of any size. It enables companies to create their own self-service infrastructure.

Capabilities of Standard Edition of UEC on Dell Servers include:

  • Create new operating system images
  • Customise new or existing images using scripts and Landscape (systems management tool)
  • Create security groups and define ALLOW/DENY rules for new or existing security groups
  • Exchange data with the cloud
  • Create a range of IP addresses to be assigned to virtual machines
  • Create ‘persistent’ volumes (EBS)
  • Deploy one or more instances of an image
  • Assign one or more EBS volumes to an instance
  • Log on to instances and deploy an application
  • Test-run the application and check the performance
  • De-allocate persistent volumes from instances
  • Terminate the instances
  • Resource monitoring and alerting via Landscape

Compatible services

Use the same APIs, including image format, storage and network services on UEC as you would on Amazon EC2.

The benefits of Standard Edition of UEC on Dell Servers

  • Install with confidence: Our pre-defined architecture helps you set up your private cloud the right way, the first time. We've taken the guesswork out of installing UEC on Dell PowerEdge C servers so that you can get yourself up and running without tedious re-working.
  • Reduce provisioning hassles: Letting users define the virtual machines they need and delivering services to them in a matter of seconds will reduce your provisioning costs and increase user satisfaction.
  • Limit your risks: Some organisations have concerns that using public cloud solutions can place their sensitive data at risk. Offering a cloud solution within your firewall will keep your information safely protected by your existing security infrastructure.
